Sinus Augmentation

What is

Sinus Augmentation?

A sinus augmentation is one of the procedures used to make the jaw bone strong enough to support dental implants. The procedure is also known as a sinus lift or sinus elevation. It requires people to have bone put beneath their sinuses. This is done when one’s upper back teeth are missing, causing the bone to deteriorate in quality.

What are the other types of Dental Implants?

Many people now find themselves needing dental implants. However, not everyone has a clear definition of what they are. In its most basic form, dental implants are false teeth that last forever. There are two types of dental implants people may need.

Endosteal Dental Implants

One type of implant done by a dentist is Endosteal. An endosteal implant is inserted into a person’s jawbone. The implant usually consists of titanium. It is typically the shape of a smaller screw that holds a tooth in place. However, it can also be in a plate or cylinder shape. Most people that need dental implants need this type.

Subperiosteal Dental Implants

The other type of implant is Subperiosteal. This type of implant belongs under a person’s gums. Unlike the Endosteal, this type does not go into the jawbone; it goes above or directly on top of it.

Subperiosteal implants are generally given to those who don’t have a normal, healthy jawbone. Though a jawbone can be rebuilt with a bone augmentation, not everyone wants to or can do this procedure.

Undergoing a bone augmentation will regenerate/restore the jaw bone. This makes it strong enough to support the placement of implants. In addition to sinus augmentation, some other techniques accomplish the same task.

Getting a ride expansion. Not everyone has a wide enough jaw to accommodate an implant. Material from a bone graft is then taken, making a new ridge on top of a person’s jaw.

Which dental implant a person receives is generally at the discretion of his or her dentist. However, people have other options when it comes to getting these implants. There are advantages and disadvantages to each option. Since the two mentioned above are the most commonly used, those in need of dental implants will want to find out more about both. These types of dental implants can help people improve their oral health and overall well being.
